Simplify game prices getting rid of the .99 gimmick, using $6 instead of $5.99 and $10 instead of $9.99 We all pay 1 cent more per game, but GOG transmits transparency, the site has less of a "marketing ploy" feeling and gamers never feel 'used'.
GOG pretends to genuinely respect their community while they apply a commercial strategy relying onto disrespectful psychological manipulation of prices, add this to the growing list of GOG's hypocrisy evidences.
> The dumbassness of the comments here is astounding O_O ... The whole world does DRM but GOG for *some reason* does not, hello? For the lack of a better word, "educate yourself". These "dumbassness" can increase your revenue by as much as 60%. Nobody cares how stupid it is, it simply works. Everyone is affected, you too, trust me.capitaloneshopping . com/research/pricing-psychology-statistics/
Research has thoroughly proven it 100% true that .99 prices DO work and increase sales. And that is EVEN if you are a person who thinks about this issue. Same for using pricetags without the currency shown. It directly translates into more money. So don't expect anyone doing this, they'd be losing money for nothing.
This plus having a "health bar" below the price that's segmented on the average price of all games and the same in numbers in a made-up comparison-only currency would be helpful to have better sense of the costs and made better long-term purchasing decisions.
See, the reason for the .99 convention is that, subliminally-speaking, our brains tend to view $9.99 as a better deal than $10. It's a weird thing but it's true. I'm not against this per-se, but all of us are more than used to this pricing convention so I don't really see a reason to do this.
Personally I'm a bit undecided in that point. But I've read some comments here and there are some very good reasons PRO that wish, so: voted!
I couldn't find a relevant topic and this is the closest one. I actually don't overly mind the deceptive .99 pricing because I'm not an impulse purchaser; cheap psychological tricks like these don't work if you actually track your spending. That said, my actual gripe is with the currencies offered. I live in southeast asia, and iirc the only options I have are USD or EURO. Aren't there closer options? Worse, Steam actually supports my country's currency, making their prices for the same games AT LEAST a third less.I detest the people who complain about $5 v $4 prices, but in my case I'm talking literally $100 vs $80. If Hollywood can sell movie tickets at the local equivalent of $12, surely you can see why people here balk at games hitting us for $100. Unlike you guys games aren't simply twice or three times as expensive - they're often TEN TIMES more.So yeah... more regional currency support, please.
Nice idea, I've quickly baked a script that seems to work just fine, but I'm not sure I'm allowed by ToS to share it on GOG, but I will share it if anyone PMs me. Tested it with greasemonkey
Yeah, it's annoying. I might write an userscript for myself just so it will display rounded prices.
The dumbassness of the comments here is astounding O_OThese people thinking they are saving money... are you for real? You think the .99 prices are there to make you save money? You think they'd keep doing that if they ploy wasn't effective? You think you're not tricked? And even if you were not, so what, you're "saving" $1 for 100 games bought. 1 fucking $ for 100 games bought?! With an average price of $3 if you buy everything on sale, that's an astounding discount of 0.3%! Well you certainly deserve a medal for your miserliness, uncle Scrooge would be proud!> sideshowman "That's stupid. The whole world does that, but you don't want it in GOG? Grow up and live with it. "The whole world does DRM but GOG for *some reason* does not, hello?
And give up the pennies ? HELL NO !!..those pennies bought me at least 3 more games..(since I have 600+ now)
I've always trusted a business more who rounds the price tag to an even bill instead of this .99 crap. It speaks of clarity amid a sea of deception that we must wade through.
You know, I can probably add this idea to Barefoot Essentials
How old are you or how long have you been living on earth that your brain did not yet manage to adjust to rounding all prices up?
Picky picky. Doesnt matter. Also .99 is a proven tactic in marketing perception... why begrudge a penny that you yourself save?
This is so stupid...If listing the price of 4.99 instead of 5.00 gets GOG a sell... I am all for it.You should not being video games if..1) You are mentally capable of critical thought.2) You don't have the money to spare.
That's stupid. The whole world does that, but you don't want it in GOG? Grow up and live with it.
The reason it's 4.99 instead of 5.00 is because it looks cheaper but not really
I understand the appeal. I wouldn't mind seeing this either. That said, many games it would still show cents when they go on sale, right?
using prepaid you have lots of cards left with cents on it, i usally keep these seperate till i have enough and then i buy a 20 or 30 cent game for it.
The .99 prices are also annoying for prepaid stuff. I bought a 9.99 game with a 10 € prepaid card, leaving 0.01 € on the card.
$5 instead of $5.99 - sounds like a good deal. $6 instead of $5.99 - why would I ever want that? If YOU want to, just script your browser to display "$6.00 - $0.01" instead... or, if you like lying to yourselves, just "$6".

Couldn't this be done with some sort of browser extension like with Enhanced Steam? Just make it round off the number whenever it detects .99 in the price box. 29.99 > 30.00, 9.99 > 10 etc. Not hard to script something like this I'd wager.

It's simple really. If you want us to pay more for our games to satisfy your OCD and sense of moral outrage at GoG's duplicity, you can pay the difference.GoG lists nice round numbers for it's prices, I keep paying the same lesser cost for my games. Your get to look at prices that don't have a decimal point in them. Everyone wins. You just gotta do your part.
"Remember what happened to J.C. Penney for trying to be fair."Yes, but JC Penny was successful mainly due to their evil manipulative nature. GOG is the opposite of that.Movie theater box offices don't use the X.99 tactic, but that's mainly so that the cashiers don't have to worry about small change and keep the lines moving.Ultimately, I have no idea a change like this would how this would effect the site for better or for worse.

Honesty and transparency would totally be worth 0.01 more per game.

MAN! YEAH! This is the ONE thing that bothers me right away when looking at GOG. It's really just a psychological deception that is very commonplace in marketing, almost like a virus because even non-businesspeople start doing it without even realizing why. Making prices like that is like a message of insincerity. And while asking for it to be stopped is not as good as not seeing it in the first place, if GOG stopped doing it, that would still be exceptionally 'brave' for a business. The sad fact is that when this is not done in countries like the Netherlands, in shops there, it's not because they realize it's deceptive, but merely because employees have to deal with less coin money, thus saving time ... and money. ... We really need to get this habitual crap out of society; become aware of what we're doing.
Yeah, when all the stores around me in real life start phasing out the .99 or .95 cents pricing "gimmick" then we can pressure gog to follow suite. Otherwise you have no reasonable grounds to expect that gog will make a precedent on this insignificant aspect of commercialism.
I'd also like to see this. I hate the &99 cents philosophy.
I don't know about anyone else but when I see a price of $9.99 I basically feel that I'm paying $10 for the product.
IMHO a stupid wish. It's all marketing psychology. X.99 has a cheaper feeling to it than Y, so people are more like to (impulse) buy the item. Lots of stores use this for a good reason. It works. It's the same for electronica stores charging $/€ 999 instead of $/€ 1,000.
.99 prices do seem so 20th century... And prices converted in other currencies (for international customers) almost never end with .99, anyway. So, I voted Yes.
This transparency, of course only applies to the dollar. If one doesn't use the dollar, you're paying more for several Americans to feel better...lol, though absolutely no idea what $0.01 is worth globally, the point still stands.Even more fun with regional pricing!
Every cent counts. The person who posted this must like not having money.
You're asking me to SPEND MORE MONEY to satisfy your OCD? Get lost!
Wow. Seems like a pretty minor gripe. Spend time gaming. Let it go.
Yes, god yes! I'm so, sooo sick of it.
I'd gladly give $.01 per game for this. I don't know if it would hurt GOG's business though.
*restaurant, sheesh!
I detest $x.99 pricing. It's at best pointless (assuming everyone sees through it, which I hope that they do) and at worst outright manipulative (because some people don't see through it and never will, whther we're talking a few dollars or a few thousand). When I walk into a testaurant and get a menu with whole-number pricing, my tip goes up 5% whether the meal or the service are any good or not. Whole-number pricing is a sign of a company that has respect for the customer.

Why is eveyone here begging to be charged more money?
for US users, i'd agree. but $1 is €0.76 for me... which is even more ridiculous that .99 :) www.IMasap.com
Do the prices show as US dollars for most customers? I assumed there was a setting somewhere to show in various major currencies (which doesn't help if you don't operate in a major currency, of course.)I'd certainly prefer 5$ to 4.99$ though.
