Against the Storm

Enjoyable but repetitve

The main game is quite enjoyable. Starting the city is a bit slow but after you get a few more people it speeds up nicely. The production chains are decent. Enough randomization and limited choices but sometimes you can re-roll enough to get what you want. The randomization doesn't push you away from the easy path you would choose if this were a regular city or colony builder. The short-lived cities don't let you progress too far into the advanced buildings but you can choose to continue a city after winning if you wish to experiment or explore. Boss levels are a bit of a shock compared to the regular game play but unless you make some really poor choices they should be beatable. I did fail my first one. One thing the game should make clearer is that you only need to do 1 of the 3 options they give you. Overall progression is okay but it gets repetitive after playing several games in a row. I'm not sure if I am working to some goal like saving the world or not. I took a break from it but I haven't gone back in almost a month. Performance was fine even through stock wine (version 11.6)

Stellaris: Astral Planes

Worst DLC: physics tech out of balance

The core of the DLC is that it adds rifts you can explore with a science ship. These look and behave much like the existing archeology dig sites. The scientist works them and occasionally you get presented with an event with a couple of options. Curious alternate universe stuff, not bad as far as stories go, but as soon as the work ends that is it. No continuing events like one of the "Dimensional Portal" alternatives. The DLC gives you another rare resource - astral threads - you can spend on bonuses. One of these is a new building you can unlock and upgrades. This building, its workers, produce the resource and massive quantities physics research allowing you to easily reach double of society and engineering empire wide. DLC adds a new origin and pre-defined race which might play into it better, somehow, which I haven't played yet. Overall it feels similar to the psychic and spiritual stuff already in the game.
