Crass and irreverent, as it should be
A first-person metroidvania with a sense of humor, High on Life delivers a variety of settings from the realistic to the absurd in an artstyle that grows on you. The gameplay is enjoyable, but the humor is what keeps you going. If you aren't a fan of Rick & Morty's style, you'll be missing what makes this game stand out. It's perfectly serviceable on it's own as a game. The mechanics are tight, and the traversal puzzles are enjoyable, but simple. The boss encounters are not breezy. It will require juggling multiple abilities in order to defeat them, but they aren't tiresome and you get that dopamine hit on victory.
PSA: The guns talk, a lot, but that's what made the game for me - A sidekick who's always got something to say, in that occasionally dark and irreverent way you expect from the show, is what makes the game unique. You can turn it down to just the necessities if you want, but you'll be missing the point.
