Thief: The Dark Project Remastered brings back the pioneering 3D stealth game from Looking Glass Studios – and it's now available for pre-order on GOG!

Described by its developers as a “first-person sneaker,” the 1998 title challenged norms with its non-confrontational gameplay at a time when most first-person games prioritized combat.

Pre-order it now!
I am currently playing original Thief Gold under Linux and I am astonished how easy it was to run it including EAX (which is usually removed in remasters). Nostalgia made me play this game, but I was shocked how bad level design is there. If they do remaster, it would make sense change levels.

Don't expect anything crazy, but could you be more specific I can only imagine 1 level unless you are referring to any tomb related levels.

From levels which I already finished, I can mention Down in the Bonehoard and Thieves' Guild. 4th and 6th levels are based on terrible mazes, where people would have to do absolutely insane things to get from one place to another. Generally it does not make sense for daily way of life. Playing it was real burned, to get key for one door where is hidden one "boss", one had to go to opposite corner of map to get key from other "boss", go through sewers which are not opened, so first boss would not be able to get out if he would like to go out. Guard in the pit standing where is not possible to go unless somebody else would open him huge canal doors guarding nothing.

I also met gamebraking bug, because I play on expert difficulty, so I got everything achieved in Assassins (5th level), but game did not find out, that I was able escape.

Shadowstalker16: If they want to release it for consoles and they might as well make it cross-platform I'm all for that. But I don't it to have these two effects:

1. It'll release and the original will never go on sale or will go on sale for much lower discounts to funnel people to the new version. Also it will split the community and modders will have to choose one version to develop for.

2. It reinforces retro-inflation and just remastering older games instead of making new games. If so many devs love their old game so much, why not make a new game in that series?
1- The original will be probably shoved on the extras section of the remastered. Well, I guess it's better that to completely nuke the old version...

2- Because it sells, is cheap to produce (not requiring a lot of upfront) and allow companies to grow more steadly. New entry is usually very risky for big budget titles.

Nightdive have overall been pretty faithful with their remakes - to my knowledge they've never gone out of their way to alter a game's level design arbitrarily.

As with most things Looking Glass made, they likely ran out of time and money by the end of the project and just had to go with what they had, and it definitely shows in some levels. That being said, 'Thieves' Guild' and 'Bonehoard' are some of my favourite missions in the series. If this is your first playthrough, I'd recommend going back and playing the game on lower difficulties. Expert can be gruelling at times.

Never had any issues with bugs, but the game is old and as I figured the issue are the ruin maps. That said the game originally wasn't suppose to be a stealth game.

Played demo when it was published in nineties and later tried to play it a few times, but always was disappointed after a few levels. I already finished third thief, but never first two. It seems to me, that game should be played on expert as it increase difficulty and make player more focused. Now I would like to finally finish first thief and later second. Wish me luck. ;)

From Nightdive was great release Chasm: The Rift, it was instabuy and up to today best quake like game in my opinion, I like it more than original. Other adjusted games are not so great, e.g. Blade Runner is disaster, but also other game was often defeatured, for example removed EAX support which add another level of experience. Graphics can be outdated, but great sound is timeless.

Bankai9212: 1.If me and others already bought and played the OG why would this impact you at all? Even if it doesn't still cheaper then the remaster especially since the gog version comes with tfix. The only funnel would be those who never owned the original release. Also unless this is on some new version of new dark, I don't expect any split since most are still using angel loader for FM maps.

2.Its easier and cheaper to remaster a 20 decade old game then making a new game. I mean how many thief based games have been released since? Not alot gloomwood has had close to a decade and yet no clear 1.0 release. Making a new thief game would cost to much with the current state of gaming.
1. Because there is quite a high chance (because its a remaster) that it'll be a lazy buggy cash grab that people won't buy voluntarily unless the old version is made more difficult to obtain; and the old version is good and may still be better than the remaster for new players. And if all the fixes can be had already in a mod, why even have a new version?

2. Its also easy and cheap to smash mods together, add some 2026 game-development magic to break it and then take the original off sale and bundle it with the new version when people don't want the remaster.

1.Would agree but this is night dive which has a solid track record, I could see if aspyr was working on it. As for the old version unless you buy it gog the one on steam doesn't come with tfix installed which is required to play the original and most people don't bother with pcwiki anymore. The remaster has some QOL stuff, that said if you have the OG again this doesn't impact you does it?

2.Its cheaper to make a remaster yes, but again this is more aimed at consoles then PC owners. If they only did it for consoles people would still complain. What does HD models break especially if like other remasters they can be disabled? Someone already stated they won't but for how long who knows. If it ends up bundled the original is still preserved since most of us have the OG again this doesn't impact us. Unless you plan to repurchase thief again in another decade?

1. I want the old version to continue to be available because if it can be fixed and played then there's isn't any reason for it to be removed / repackaged. I might have certain edition of a book but that doesn't mean it would be ok for that edition to go out of publication; same principle here. Also from a barrier to entry perspective, it would be good to have a low-cost, low-system req version for people on a budget.

2. I agree that a console-only version would invite complaints but all I want is that want the perfectly functional old version to exist as-is. As long as it doesn't turn out being a net negative compared to the original, I'm perfectly fine with it.

1.More likely when the store front shuts down people will have a means to download, The reality is people prefer convenience. Editions change all the time you'd have something unique but this is video games so long as someone has an archive people will be able to download it. Plus since you need tfix to run it anyways most aren't playing it vanilla anymore. Games always go on sale people can wait for a price they are willing to purchase. If they aren't buying the originals that go as low as 1 dollar clearly its not a cost thing. Also gaming has become so expensive game purchases is the least of thier problems.

2.Only answer I can give you is backup the offline installer. Considering what the perservation program GOG wouldn't keep the old versions after awhile.
Yes, it's a high price for a game of this age, but this is one of those classics I still think would be worth it even at 60 euros. And I heard it would include a user-friendly Dromed as well! Sold! Also ordered the physical trapezoid edition for Switch 2 :)
